After 50 years in the profession, the plastic artist and woodcut artist, Ciro Fernandes, opened a studio in Lapa (R. Henrique Valadares, 23/1103), which displays more than 50 works, including oils, matrices, woodcuts and illustrations made for important books and publications. The 120m2 space is a mix of studio and gallery and was designed to welcome friends, clients and admirers.

The studio

The artist, now 81 years old, celebrates his new professional phase with genuine joy. “I feel very happy to be able to fully practice my art and once again have the possibility of personal contact with friends and other artists that the pandemic had taken away from me. I'm a country person of few words, but I enjoy interacting with people who like art. After all, we work for them, right? My hands work for the eyes of others”, says Ciro.

The idea for the space, next to the artist's house, came from Ciro's art dealer and son, Bruno Fernandes, and daughter-in-law, Monica D. Fernandes, who began to dedicate themselves professionally to the artist's trajectory during the Covid-19 pandemic. “Isolation deprived him of contact with friends and admirers who used to frequent his home/studio. We invested in social networks and greatly expanded relationships that, in this virtual environment, ignore the limitations of time and space. Now, with the release of personal interaction, the old studio is no longer enough to house so many people and so much art”, says Bruno.
